• Application(s): Short acting intravenous anaesthetic agent used for the induction of general anaesthesia and for sedation for short procedures such as reduction of dislocated joints and cardioversion.
• Mechanism of Action: Binds at a distinct binding site associated with a Cl- ionopore at the GABA(A) receptor, increasing the duration of time for which the Cl- ionopore is open.
• Mechanism of Action: The post-synaptic inhibitory effect of GABA in the thalamus is, therefore, prolonged.
