REFERENCES

  • Useful ether solvent because of its limited solubility in water and ease of drying by azeotropic distillation, low viscosity even at low temperatures, relatively low tendency to form peroxides, and compatibility with strong bases. Possible uses include organometallic and phase-transfer reactions.
  • Non-carcinogenic alternative to chloromethyl ethyl ether for ethoxymethylation of alcohols and phenols: Synthesis, 794 (1981), or amines: Chem. Pharm. Bull., 34, 150 (1986).
  • Can also act as a convenient formaldehyde substitute (compare Dimethoxymethane, A12055).
