DETAILS

Description (English)
Application
The addition of sulfaguanidine to the diet lowered cholesterol in the rat model1. It′s effectiveness has been studied against Encephalitozoon cuniculi2 and it has been used to study In vitro displacement of bilirubin in newborns3 .
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sulfaguanidine is a sulfonamide antibiotice. Sulfonamides have a similar structure to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and interfere with DNA synthesis by blocking the coversion of PABA to the co-enzyme dihydrofolic acid, a reduced form of folic acid. Their actions are primarily bacteriostatic, but can be bactericidal when concentrations of thymine are low in the surrounding medium.
